Integrating Life Cycle Dynamic Simulation and Training for Efficient Design, Startup, and Operation

Oil and gas exploration and production companies invest heavily in sizeable assets that must be delivered at the lowest possible cost and then optimized to operate efficiently and safely. While much attention is paid to physical assets and the implementation of the latest technical innovations, operating personnel continue to be trained and developed using techniques perfected in the last century.

This paper presents a new way of improving performance of an asset by focusing on the human side of the equation. Dynamic simulation tools typically used to design projects provide a powerful operations and training tool as well. It is now possible to use one dynamic process model all the way through a production asset's life that ranges from conceptual engineering to long-term operations. The same model can provide the foundation of an effective training program.

High performance, safely operated assets have a common trait; the operations workforce receives structured training that incorporates continuous and creative uses of simulators. Traditional operator training techniques in use for decades continue to dominate the industry. As a result, operator performance achieves only minimal levels of competency.

Industry demands, however, that operators safely achieve high levels of production in an optimal and safe manner. This gap between demands and capabilities must be addressed. The concepts presented in this paper creatively integrate simulation technologies and training programs in order to accelerate competencies beyond only “good enough”. The end result is a workforce that can safely operate a plant, optimize its production and recover more quickly from upsets.

Operator Training Simulators - Nova Chemicals' Experience for Training, Certification, and Other Applications

The Nova Chemicals Site located in Joffre, AB Canada has numerous gas-cracking olefins units as well as down-stream polyolefins processing plants. Nova has been utilizing Operator Training Simulators at this site for over 12 years as part of a comprehensive training and certification program for its control room operators. This paper reviews how the simulators have been used as part of this program. In addition, it describes other ways that the simulators have contributed to the overall benefit of the petrochemical complex. The topics to be discussed are:

Current simulator models within Nova, history, and future development.
Training structure of simulator training.
Benefits of the simulator to the original startup of the E-3 Olefins unit.
Flaring reductions during startups and shutdowns of the Ethylene plants.
Development of trip applications for the Ethylene plants.
Simulator use for development of Polyethylene (Sclair technology) startup advanced control.
Additional simulator uses, including:
1. Experimental Operations
2. Testing of DCS software upgrades
3. Development of advanced applications
4. Graphics development.

ROSNEFT has selected RSI technology for its Refining Units Training Simulators. The development of the first simulator has been launched, November the 10th, on the Rosneft Komsomolsk Refining Site (Khabarovsk region, Russia).

June, 2011 – Eni Norge has selected ABB Norway and RSI to provide the dynamic process model for the OTS for the Goliat Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO).

Goliat is the first oil field to be developed in the Barents Sea (North of Arctic Circle).

Eni Norge will use an integrated dynamic model developed within INDISS simulation environment, including topsides model from RSI and embedding OLGA subsea multiphase model from SPT Group. Eni Norge's choice confirms RSI's leading position in upstream simulators

RSI presents console operator training practices in the US at NPRA

RSI Director of Training Services addresses the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association, Workforce Training and Development Forum, on console operator training practices in the US.

George Dzyacky, RSI Director of Training Services, was invited to speak at the NPRA Workforce Training and Development Forum held in San Antonio Texas. George spoke on the need for dramatic improvements in the way console operators are trained. Of all the professional, trade and administrative disciplines needed to operate a refinery or petrochemical facility, managers, accountants, engineers, electricians, pipefitters, machinists, administrative assistants etc., console operators, who arguably occupy the most safety-critical position in the plant, are the only ones trained and brought all the way to “qualification” by their coworkers. George went on to say that, console operator certification should be no less rigorous than that of a journeymen electrician or machinist.

RSI to supply an OTS to Technip for a mid-scale LNG Plant in China

Hands-On Experience with a Virtual Coker Unit

RSI's Simulator Systems were used to demonstrate dynamic plant responses including coke drum switching, hydrocarbons in the sulfur unit feed, foaming in the amine contactor and other challenging operating scenarios.

RSI Simcon Delayed Coker Simulator, as all RSI Simcon simulators, can be customize to look exactly like your control system and DCS operating displays to maximize training realism. The various pictures of the Coker Simulator show you the simulator and some screen displays. The dynamic process models are developed using the same design and controls information used to build the actual plant.
