NOVA Chemicals selected RSI to deliver Operator Training Simulator for the Polyethylene 1 (PE1) plant

May 01, 2015

Houston, May 2015 – NOVA Chemicals has selected RSI to provide the high fidelity Operator Training Simulators (OTS) for the existing low-density polyethylene (LDPE) facilities at the Joffre Site.

The NOVA Chemicals Site located in Joffre, AB Canada has numerous gas-cracking olefins units as well as down-stream polyolefins processing plants.
It is one of the largest ethylene and polyethylene production complexes in the world. RSI will provide high-fidelity Indiss Plus process model in a direct connect OTS system with interface to a replica of the plant DCS. PLC logic (TMR, PSA) will be modelled as part of the Indiss Plus model.

RSI’s turn-key responsibilities for the OTS project will include:

Delivery of instructor station and simulation software

Development of first-principle high-fidelity dynamic process model of the polyethylene train 1 & 2, using Indiss Plus™ dynamic simulation software, including Catalyst Feed systems, Reaction loop cycle gas system with two reaction trains, Product purging system,C6 Recovery system, PSA Feed Compression system, PSA network, PSA Product compression system, TMR
system, Feeds, Nitrogen Supply system and Liquid Flare Collection System
Integration of the process model with control & safety system
Commissioning and installation of OTS systems at site in Canada
Instructor training courses at site
NOVA Chemicals have been using Operator Training Simulators from RSI Simcon at this site for over 15 years as part of a comprehensive training and certification program for its control room operators. NOVA Chemicals is proud of its safety, operational and environmental performance and considers the use of high fidelity simulators an important part of these accomplishments. Peter Herbert, CEO of RSI Simcon Inc. stated, “We are really pleased that NOVA Chemicals has once again selected RSI to provide the OTS for their Joffre plant. We are confident that the use of our high fidelity simulator will allow the trainees to gain valuable experience in normal and abnormal plant operations.”
